Aug 3, 2021

Houston Community College (HCC) Northeast President Monique Umphrey, D.M., PMP, has been elected to the role of president for the American Association for Women in Community Colleges. Her term begins this month and runs through 2023.

The association leads efforts to ensure equitable treatment for women at community colleges and promotes their success. Members from across the nation also champion women students by offering scholarships, mentoring and professional development opportunities.

“I am excited about the work of the association as it strives to uplift women through leadership and education,” Dr. Umphrey said. “We need more leaders who understand the urgency of advocating for the students that community colleges serve, especially women.”

She noted that community colleges are in the national spotlight as education is transformed by the pandemic, changing demographics and other challenges.

Dr. Umphrey has led Northeast College since 2019. She previously served as vice president of Workforce Innovation and dean for Information Technology at Cuyahoga Community College in Ohio.
